What is Acupuncture?

A Simple Definition

Acupuncture is the application of targeted stimulation of key points on the body to facilitate positive activity through the body’s internal “wiring” and systems.

Acupuncture works by stimulating the “meridians” to support the proper flow of “Qi” (pronounced: “chee”).  The key points are called “acupoints” and are precise points where the Qi accumulates.

Targeted stimulation of the acupoints can be provided with hair-thin needles, but it can also be done without needles by using stones, cups, or even fingers (acupressure).

Qi and the Meridians

Qi is the bio-electrical life force of the body. It comes from our parents, the food and drink we ingest, and the air we breathe. Qi travels in the body through a series of interconnected pathways that travel both close to the surface and deeper within the body we call meridians, or channels, which make up the electrical system of the body.

Acupuncture for Pain Management

General Pain Management

Acupuncture has a centuries long track record of relieving pain and the list of types of pain it alleviates is comprehensive. Over the years we have successfully treated pain from migraine, headaches, sinus pain, PMS and severe cramping, sports and auto injury, fibromyalgia and both chronic and acute pain.  In most cases, pain can be eliminated or strongly mitigated.

Injury Recovery

Acupuncture increases both local and systemic circulation. The increase in circulation clears out cellular waste and brings in fresh blood and building blocks to speed recovery.

Gastrointestinal Regulation

A safe and natural approach to treating imbalance and illness affecting the digestive system. A partial list of disorders readily treated includes, nausea, pain, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, IBS and bloating.

Muscle Pain & Soreness

Muscle pain, strain and soreness is quickly alleviated through the increase in circulation that acupuncture has been proven to induce in numerous scientific studies.

Acupuncture for Pain Management

Menstrual Cycle Regulation

“You can not successfully treat a woman without first regulating her cycle”.

Our founder took these words from his teacher to heart, and we have always found them to be true. The root and core of a woman’s health is a balanced cycle.  Acupuncture has proven time and again to be an invaluable tool for treating menstrual issues like painful period, (dysmenorrhea), lack of periods, (amenorrhea), irregular or excessively heavy cycles.

Infertility & Pregnancy

Acupuncture has been absolutely embraced by medical fertility and IVF  clinics for good reason; it works. Acupuncture has proven a successful treatment strategy for both female and male infertility.

Pre Menstrual Syndrome

PMS means different things to different women, none of them fun. Mood swings and irritability, anxiety, headaches or a variety of pain is most common. Often there is dread as the time approaches. Acupuncture often provides great relief from these symptoms in just one session and we have regularly seen patients cleared completely of these symptoms.

Cramping & Bloating

Cramping and bloating either before or during the period is easily alleviated with acupuncture. Often this happens while the patient is on the table. The increase in circulation locally and in the Liver that acupuncture induces releases the cramping muscles and allows the pressure to subside.

Acupuncture for Migraine & Nervous System

Migraine

From the American Migraine Foundation.

“Based on a recent systematic review of 22 clinical trials involving 4985 people, there is evidence that acupuncture reduces the frequency of headache in individuals with migraine, and that the effect may be similar to that observed with preventive medications. The frequency of headache is dropped by 50% or more in up to 59% of individuals receiving acupuncture and this effect can persist for more than 6 months.”

Depression

Clinical studies discussed in The Psychiatric Times and The National Institute of Health attest to the efficacy of acupuncture in treating depression, This includes drug withdrawal induced depression and depression during and after pregnancy.

Anxiety & PTSD

Anxiety and PTSD have been treated successfully with acupuncture therapy.  From the United Kingdom website ptsduk.org; “Acupuncture is a safe, non-stigmatizing and therapeutic treatment that has proven to be effective in reducing PTSD symptoms.  A randomized controlled study of active duty US military service personnel in 2014 found that acupuncture could help to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, reduce pain, and improve mental and physical health functioning.

Insomnia & Sleep Cycle Regulation

From the US National Library of Medicine and The National Institute of Health

“Insomnia is one of the most common diseases in modern society. Almost everyone has experienced or is experiencing insomnia, which can lead to a series of negative emotions, such as fatigue, inefficiency, cognitive decline, social interaction, tension, and anxiety. It is also a risk factor of arterial hypertension, myocardial infarction, and chronic heart failure, which can give society and families. It brings great psychological and economic burden. Acupuncture may be one of the alternative methods to treat insomnia, with little side effects. At present, there are many reports that acupuncture has a significant effect on insomnia.”

No Needles?  No Problem.

Even though acupuncture needles are hair-thin and painless, some people would prefer an alternative. Fortunately, with acupressure, you can receive the benefits without the needles!

Our Non-Intrusive Treatment Philosophy

At Infinite Pillar our goal is to provide the maximum benefit to the patient with the least amount of intrusion or discomfort to the body. Your wellness and comfort are our top priority, and our methods reflect this.

In acupuncture, as in many things, less is more.  In most cases, ten or fewer needles are used per session to give a strong, clear message to the body. For many people needleless acupuncture is preferred over the needles, and is offered as well.

We also use the highest quality of needles to ensure there are no burrs, snags, or other surface irregularities to impede your healing.

What to Expect

Most people fall asleep on the table. Acupuncture needle insertion is very quick using very thin needles. There may be some slight sensation but it is rarely painful.

The initial session with the intake, diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan usually takes around 90 min. Subsequent session are 60 min. Most acupuncturists treat patients for a mere 15 minutes and often try to see 2 or 3 patients in an hour.

At Infinite Pillar, most acupuncture takes place from wrist to elbow and foot to knee. Loose fitting sleeves and pants are recommended for treatment.

Acupuncture has been proven over thousands of years and millions and millions of patients to be safe and very effective. It is the oldest codified form of healing on the planet. This has been affirmed again and again in the modern world by countless exhaustive scientific studies.
